Last week I had total hip replacement. One way I prepared for it was by imagining myself in three months walking upright, sans pain, sans cane. Walking not just three blocks, but three miles! It was an effective incentive that served me well. Still serves me well.
I find that now it serves me better to live authentically in this liminal time of recovery. As seers say, live in the now. I am trying to be faithful to a grounding meditation in which I release unwanted ego energy (“I should increase my walk today”) into the earth, and draw healing energy from the earth into my hip and leg and whole body. Without that ego clamor I am then able to hear my body tell me what it can and can’t do. This liminal time between disability and ability has become sacred to me. I can only imagine what other lessons will present themselves in the weeks ahead.

Every morning upon waking I go outside and do body prayer. The movement and prayer to the Divine Mother reconnects me to this life and my day.

Oh Rita. I’m so glad you’ve had this hip replacement that your body needs. I’ve seen it make such a difference to many people. You will be walking that extra mile really soon with your positive attitude. I do love your powerful recovery practice of discharging into the earth and pulling healing energy up from the earth. I also bring healing energy in from the medulla on the back of the head and feel it tingle its way all through my body. You can also direct it to a specific place (I’m thinking hip obviously!!). I use this affirmation along with it: “The healing power of spirit is flowing through every cell of my body. I am made of the one universal God substance. Father, Thou art in me. I am well.” (Paramahansa Yogananda). Take good care of yourself Rita. Anita x

Hi Rita. Meant to respond earlier but life intervened. Hope you are doing well in your recovery. My “in-between” time lasted from my car accident two years ago until about a year later. Three months in a wheelchair and the subsequent learning to walk again. My Centering Prayer practice of twenty years was, as always, crucial. And what’s come out of the entire period for me is an absolute knowing that this precious moment is where “God” is – by whatever name you call Her/Him/It. No where else. I’ve even recently radically reduced my verbal prayers (both spoken and silent) – and what’s taken their place is that simply being present to the Living Presence. One other blessing that’s come out of having the broken body caused by the accident is that I am so much more conscious of this holy body of mine. It’s all gift, isn’t it? (Although certainly doesn’t always “feel” like it.) Brian
