“A pearl is a beautiful thing that is produced by an injured life. It is the tear [that results] from the injury of the oyster. The treasure of our being in this world is also produced by an injured life. If we had not been wounded, if we had not been injured, then we will not produce the pearl. “
-Stephen Hoeller
The idea of this post emerged from my read of an excellent post, “The Dragon’s Pearl” on http://whatashrinkthinks.com/. I hope you enjoy Martha Crawford’s journey through identifying and healing our psychological and spiritual wounds.
It’s strange that a certain injury creates a pearl while another creates a loss. A certain injury converts someone into a saint while the same injury converts another person into a psycho! Where then lies the difference? Is it in the nature/strength of the injury itself or is it the healing power of an individual that makes all the difference? I wonder whether our healing power comes from love…and if spirituality is not about love then what is it!

Thank you for this powerful reflection. I thinks it’s both things. I would also add that privilege of education and culture gives us opportunities for healing unavailable to many. So we must be wounded healers.
